Cell Phone Radiation


Right now there are almost as many cell phones in use on the planet as there are people. Even the poorest among us somehow can afford to have a cell phone. It's similar to everybody being able to get an unbelievable deal on a mortgage a few years back. We later found out that that was a designed scam to bankrupt millions. Vaccines are also offered free or nearly free. Hmmm... makes you wonder if there is something sinister about cell phones and the cell phone towers - 250,000 of them- that cover the country. Why do cell phones operate at the same frequency as your brain waves? Is that dangerous? Do cell phones cause brain cancers? Could cell phones be used for mind control purposes? It would be better if we had real solid answers to these questions.

Which Smart Phones Emit the Most Radiation?

The health effects of cell phone radiation is a growing concern which is why many cell phone users have been consulting a Cell Phone Radiation Guide to figure out which phones let them keep talking and texting while limiting radiation as much as possible. That report was put together by Environmental Working Group last September and this year, the environmental health nonprofit has come out with an update to cover the new, most-popular cell phones of 2010.

The bad news: Some of the most-hyped phones that have gotten raves from tech experts also give off quite a bit of radiation. Motorola’s Droid, Blackberry Bold 9700, LG Chocolate Touch and HTC Nexus One by Google are among the flashy phones to avoid because all four “are pushing the edge of radiofrequency radiation safety limits set by the Federal Communications Commission,” according to EWG.

The good news: A number of smart phones on the market keep you connected without leaching so much radiation. EWG notes that the Motorola Brute i680, Samsung Mythic, and Pantech Impact are phones with some of the lowest emissions — and advises cell phone users to stick to these lower-emissions phones until we learn more about the long-term health effects of cell phone radiation.

Then click on your carrier’s name on EWG’s “Get a Safer Phone” page to get a list of the phones available through your carrier. The Truth About Fats in the Diet

For as long as most of us can remember we have been hearing about the danger of eating too much fat in the diet. We have been warned that this will cause heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Doctors in white lab coats, TV ads, magazine articles and health gurus alike have chorused these warning until most of us just take it for granted that it must be true. So we purchase the low fat or no fat foods in our super market thinking that we are doing something great for our health and wellness. I know one Sister who served bean soup that didn't quite taste right. When I inquired about her recipe, I found out that she did not use any cooking oil! She thought it was bad!

We have also been led to assume that animal fat is bad and vegetable fat (or oils) are good. Or that fat in the diet makes a person fat! All of these misconceptions and misunderstandings need to be cleared up. The following article from our good friend Dr Mercola sheds a great deal of light on the subject. While I don't think much of his special diet per se, in general, the information he gives out is very helpful.

Saturated Fat is NOT the Cause of Heart Disease

The saturated fat found mainly in meat and dairy products has been regularly vilified by physicians and the media, but a new analysis of published studies finds no clear link between people's intake of saturated fat and their risk of developing heart disease.
In the new analysis, which combined the results of 21 previous studies, researchers found no clear evidence that higher saturated fat intakes led to higher risks of heart disease or stroke.
A number of studies have linked the so-called Western diet to greater heart disease risks; that diet pattern is defined as one high in red meats and saturated fats -- but it is also high in sweets and other refined carbohydrates like white bread.

The demonization of saturated fat began in 1953 with Dr. Ancel Keys’ publication of a paper comparing fat intake and heart disease mortality, and the misguided ousting of saturated fat has continued ever since.
The idea that saturated fat is bad for your heart became so ingrained in the medical and health community, anyone daring enough to question this dogma was automatically viewed as a quack, regardless of the evidence presented.
Instead, trans fats became all the rage and have since saturated the market.
But times are a-changing, and in many ways for the better.
Along with a new interest in reviewing the sanity of vaccinating against every microscopic foe under the sun, medical scientists have finally begun to take a hard look at the link between saturated fats and heart disease – only to find that there is none.
Additionally, by now many have realized that it’s the
trans fat found in margarine, vegetable shortening, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils that is the true villain, causing far more significant health problems than saturated fat ever could.
Yet Another Study Finds No Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease
Over the years, researchers have repeatedly failed to find the link between saturated fat and heart disease that Dr. Keys initially thought he had discovered, and this latest study is no exception.
When they pooled data from 21 studies that included nearly 348,000 adults, and surveyed their dietary habits and health events for anywhere from five to 23 years, they found no no difference in the risks of heart disease and stroke between people with the lowest and highest intakes of saturated fat.
Most likely, the studies that have linked the so-called “Western diet” to an increased heart disease risk simply confirm that sugar and refined carbohydrates are harmful to your heart health. Because although the Western diet is high in red and processed meats and saturated fats, it’s also alarmingly high in sugar and refined carbs like bread and pasta.
What I found most encouraging in this article was Dr. Eckel’s statement that “the thinking on diet and heart health is moving away from a focus on single nutrients and toward ‘dietary patterns’."
This is precisely the message that needs to get out. You simply cannot optimize your health while staring at individual ingredients or nutrients in your diet.
Whole foods – real food that has been minimally processed and manipulated – contain so many symbiotic micronutrients that work together to produce the end result. The moment you start taking these ingredients apart, you lose the overall nutritional value, and you change how the nutrients operate inside your body.
Take the Mediterranean diet, for example. It consists mainly of whole, fresh foods like fruits and vegetables, along with fish, whole grains and unsaturated fats like virgin olive oil.
This type of diet has repeatedly been found to help lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. And although it’s low in saturated fats, perhaps the most significant thing about the Mediterranean style diet is the absence of processed foods, which are loaded with sugars and dangerous trans fats.
So, essentially, a healthy diet is quite simply a natural diet of REAL foods. And that’s the type of “eating pattern” you’ll want to strive for, if you want to be optimally healthy.
Confusing the Facts About Saturated Fats
Part of the scientific confusion about saturated fats relates to the fact that your body is capable of synthesizing the saturated fats it needs from carbohydrates, and these saturated fats are principally the same ones present in dietary fats of animal origin.
However, and this is the key, not all saturated fatty acids are created equal.
There are subtle differences that have profound health implications, and if you avoid eating all saturated fats you will suffer serious health consequences. There are in fact more than a dozen different types of
saturated fat, but you predominantly consume only three: stearic acid, palmitic acid and lauric acid.
It’s already been well established that stearic acid (found in cocoa and animal fat) has no effect on your cholesterol levels at all, and actually gets converted in your liver into the monounsaturated fat called oleic acid.
The other two, palmitic and lauric acid, do raise total cholesterol. However, since they raise “good” cholesterol as much or more than “bad” cholesterol, you’re still actually lowering your risk of heart disease.
Yes, You DO Need Saturated Fat!
Foods containing saturated fats include:
Meat
Dairy products
Some oils
Tropical plants such as coconut and palm trees
These (saturated) fats from animal and vegetable sources provide a concentrated source of energy in your diet, and they provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone-like substances.
When you eat fats as part of your meal, they slow down absorption so that you can go longer without feeling hungry. In addition, they act as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
Dietary fats are also needed for the conversion of carotene to vitamin A, for mineral absorption, and for a host of other biological processes.
Saturated fats are also:
The preferred fuel for your heart, and also used as a source of fuel during energy expenditure
Useful antiviral agents (caprylic acid)
Effective as an anticaries, antiplaque and anti fungal agents (lauric acid)
Useful to actually lower cholesterol levels (palmitic and stearic acids)
Modulators of genetic regulation and prevent cancer (butyric acid)
The Link Between TRANS FAT and Heart Disease
Now, it is still clear that there is some association between fat and heart disease. The problem lies in the fact that most studies make no effort to differentiate between
saturated fat and trans fat. Additionally, the other primary processed food that typically is associated with trans fat is sugar, specifically fructose.
What Ancel Keys, and other researchers have failed to do in their multivariate analysis is control for each of these two variables. If researchers were to more carefully evaluate the risks of heart disease by measuring the levels of fructose, trans and saturated fat, they would most likely find the true answer.
You see,
fructose and trans fat known to increase your LDL levels, or "bad" cholesterol, while lowering your levels of HDL, known as "good" cholesterol, which, of course is the complete opposite of what you need in order to maintain good heart health. It can also cause major clogging of arteries, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems.
Your body needs some amount of saturated fat to stay healthy. It is virtually impossible to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet that has no saturated fat. What you don’t need, however, are trans fats and fructose in excess of 15 grams per day. Since the average adolescent is now consuming 75 grams of fructose per day, one can begin to understand why we have an obesity and heart disease epidemic.
Contradictory Results SUPPORT Nutritional Typing
Studies also clearly show that despite great compliance to low saturated fat diets, there is a wide difference in biological responses. The question is, what does this mean? Does it mean the studies are flawed? And if so, which ones?
Interestingly enough, perhaps they’re all “right,” because these contradictory results actually
support nutritional typing, which predicts that one-third of people will do very well on low saturated fat diets (which supports the studies showing that they work), but another one-third of people need high saturated fat diets to stay healthy.
Healthy Fat Tips to Live By
Remember, you do need a certain amount of healthy fat, while at the same time you’ll want to avoid the unhealthy varieties.
The easiest way to accomplish this is to simply
eliminate processed foods, which are high in all things detrimental to your health: sugar, carbs, and dangerous types of fats.
After that, these tips can help ensure you’re eating the right fats for your health:
Use
organic butter (preferably made from raw milk) instead of margarines and vegetable oil spreads. Butter is a healthy whole food that has received an unwarranted bad rap.
Use
coconut oil for cooking. It is far superior to any other cooking oil and is loaded with health benefits. (Remember that olive oil should be used COLD, drizzled over salad or fish, for example, not to cook with.)
Following my
nutrition plan will automatically reduce your modified fat intake, as it will teach you to focus on healthy whole foods instead of processed junk food.
To round out your healthy fat intake, be sure to eat raw fats, such as those from avocados, raw dairy products, and olive oil, and also take a high-quality source of animal-based
omega-3 fat, such as krill oil.

Seven Reasons to Grow Your Own Food

(or Seven Reasons Why You Need a Hoop House!)
Not that being part of a trend is ever a good reason to start or learn something new, but if it helps you move forward by being part of the “in” crowd, then you really need to plant your own edible garden this year.

That’s right, having your own vegetable garden is now trendy. In fact according to the 2009 Edibles
Gardening Trends Research Report conducted by the Garden Writer’s Association (GWA) Foundation, over 41 million U.S. households, or 38 percent planted a vegetable garden in 2009. And, more than 19.5 million households (18 percent) grew an herb garden and 16.5 million households (15 percent) grew fruits during the same period.
The study found that there was a growth in edible gardening from both experienced gardeners and from an influx of new gardeners: 92 percent of respondents had previous experience and 7 percent (7.7 million households) were new edible gardeners.
And one-third of the experienced gardeners grew more edibles in 2009 than in the previous year. The GWA indicates that given the strong response for plans to grow more edibles into 2010, the vegetable gardening trend will continue and there will likely be a new high level of edible gardening activity this year.
Another survey done by the American Gardening Association showed a 19 percent increase in new hobby country farms and urban edible gardens in 2009 over 2008.
So, aside from its popularity, do you need some other reasons to grown your own food?
The GWA’s survey found that the main reason given for increasing or maintaining edible gardening last year was to supplement household food supply — to help them save money on food. That alone is a very powerful reason.
There is nothing more
local than food grown in your own backyard, your windowsills, or on patio containers.
Growing your own fruits and vegetables means that you know exactly what does and does not go into your food and exactly where it comes from.

You will get healthier in a number of ways. Not only will you end up eating more fruits and vegetables, but you will be getting added exercise. Did you know that you can burn as many calories in 45 minutes of gardening as you can in 30 minutes of aerobics? And, working in the garden
reduces stress.
You will get a bigger variety of your favorite fruits and vegetables because you can choose from hundreds of different varieties and you can grow the things you like the best.
You can
teach your children or grandchildren where their food actually comes from and that it doesn’t come from the supermarket but from the soil, the earth that we all depend on.

The Ultimate Survival Kit (video)

Is the hoop house the ultimate survival kit?
If survival means haveing food in production year round on a small amount of land or roof that you control then the answer is an emphatic yes. Nothing else makes sense. How are you going to store up enough food to last until somebody else grows some more and then sees to it that you get some? That's like secretly hoping that this system which is about to fall will somehow revive and come back to feed us like it always did. To me the hoop house urban farm system is how we are going to do what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad told us to do - get our mouth out of somebody else's kitchen! So hoop house agriculture is right on our level. Anybody can do it with very little money and very little training. In exchange you get to grow your own food and you get to eat it and sell and surplus that you may have. That is a beautiful system of doing things.
The following video short is from the bulletin board at Muhammad Mosque No. 23 in Buffalo where the Believers helped to build a hoop house and introduced it to me. I have been on fire with enthusiasm ever since.

The Intelligence of the Body


One of the greatest mysteries among many mysteries concerning the human body is just where memories are stored. Most people would assume the brain of course, but the following article raises some serious implications - suppose the whole body is intelligent? Suppose every part of the body -including the brain- contains intelligent memories? Is memory holographic - where the whole is present in every part?


While the article is talking about memory transfer via organ transplant - what about traces of consciousness being tranferred with the eating of the flesh from an animal which was conscious before it died? Could that lead to an animalistic consciousness in a human?

Transplant patients sometimes take on part of their donors’ personalities.
Glenda lost her husband, David, in a car crash. She made his organs available for transplant. A few years later, as part of a study by neuropsychologist Paul Pearsall, she met the young Spanish-speaking man who had received her late husband’s heart. Filled with emotion, Glenda asked if she could lay her hand on his chest. “I love you, David,” she said. “Everything’s copa­cetic.”
The young man’s mother, also present, was startled. “My son uses that word now,” she said. “He never said it before his heart transplant. I don’t know that word; it doesn’t exist in Spanish. But it was the first thing he said after the operation.”
Her son appeared to have changed in other ways too. Before, he had been a health-conscious vegetarian; now he craved meat and greasy food. He had loved heavy metal music; now he played nothing but fifties rock ’n’ roll. Glenda’s husband had been an ardent meat-lover and played in a rock ’n’ roll band.
Does the heart have a memory? Is part of an organ donor’s personality also transferred to the recipient in a transplant? Yes, contends Pearsall in his book The Heart’s Code, which provides other remarkable examples of transplanted hearts with memories.
An 8-year-old girl received the heart of a 10-year-old girl who had been murdered. The recipient ended up at a psychiatrist’s office, plagued by nightmares about her donor’s murderer. She said she knew who the man was. After a few sessions, the psychiatrist decided to notify the police. Following the girl’s instructions, they tracked down the murderer. The man was convicted on evidence she had provided the first clues about: the time, the weapon, the place, the clothes he wore, what his victim told him. Everything the girl said turned out to be true.
Pearsall’s book is based on 73 heart-transplant cases in which parts of the donors’ personalities appear to have been transferred to the recipients.

'Many a truth is spoken in jest' and 'out of the mouths of babes' are two old saying that get combined at the same time in this TV commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. Whether it is funny or not, you decide. But what is the 'truth' that it reveals? The ad is for Doritos, one of the most refined artificial and dangerous so-called snack foods there is. Why dangerous? Because of the high level of the excito-toxin MSG that they contain. Excito-toxins are chemicals that cause brain cells to go crazy and can be an immediate cause of rage and violent outbursts, especially if combined with other excito-toxins such as aspartame
- or even just sugar!
Eat such things if you want to, feed it to your children if you want to,
but you just might get slapped!

He Who Controls Your Food Controls You!

Ever since humans have been on this planet, we have been engaged in a struggle to get enough good food to eat in order to live, reproduce and build our civilizations. Primitive man knew when he got up in the morning that he had to find food in order to avoid starvation. So food finding was a serious endeavor that was not played with. It formed the basis of how society was organized and governed.
Is it any different today?
Whether you are aware of it or not, you actually have the same struggle on your hands today. Where are you going to find some real food today, and tomorrow and forever? If you fail in this endeavor you and your family will die.
The would-be-rulers of the New World Order know that they can never have the Godlike absolute power they desire of life and death over the masses of humans on this planet unless they can control the access to food and nutritional supplements. So it is not surprising that the Congressional whores in Washington have been paid to limit your and my access to food and food supplements -
for our safety of course!

The McCain bill seeks to overthrow major provisions of the current law and force "HARMonization" with international Codex Alimentarius (so-called "World Food Code") restrictions on our food and health freedoms.

NOTE: If you have already taken this Action Item, we encourage you, and every member of your family and circle of contacts to do so again since it has been amended to reflect the passage of HR 2749 on July 30, 2009 after two failed attempts on the previous days, the "mark-up" of the Senate version, S510 in November 2009 and McCain's February 2010 gambit to extend the attack to Dietary Supplements. If passed by the Senate, in any form, the Food Fascism Bill will guarantee the loss of clean, healthy food, high potency dietary supplements and independent farming in the US -- and the complete industrialization of the US food supply. Now the question is what will the Senate do?
We did manage to get some protective exemptions into the House bill for small farmers who sell food directly to consumers or to restaurants, but they are, frankly, weak and will not be enough to protect your food or our farmers. But the Senate bill has much weaker protections, just mentioning minor exemptions for restaurants once and farms twice. McCain's "Dietary Supplement Safety" bill is an obvious attempt to get the stalled (sic) "food safety" show going again.
We need to rally people immediately to submit the below email message to the Senate and to visit with their Senators at home to demand accountable voting on this bill.
The Obama administration is pushing new farm controls which will drive small and independent farmers off the land, literally leaving the field to Agribiz, (implementing all of Codex through complete HARMonization and allowing the FDA to declare Marshal law) through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the House bills so there will be no debate and committee meetings are closed. The story will not be the same in the Senate, if we can generate enough public outrage!
Transparency, change, undoing Bush's regulations, giving the public time to comment, grassroots anything? None are visible in the current legislative process. Our entire food system, and thus our health, is being given to the last people with any interest in quality or safety: Big Abgribiz. This is going on in the absence of public scrutiny. Those who do know what is happening, of course, have zero access to the process and to the major media. Meanwhile, the media is absent while Congress is moving at warp speed to sew this up.
There will be no direct, frontal assault on organic farming and dietary supplements, but an insidious process of "infecting" organic farming and nutrient products with regulations, "traceability" requirements, required practices and prohibitions enforced by truly draconian fines and prision terms for even minor offenses running to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars and 8 years in prison for minor offenses... all under the guise of fake "food safety."
Example: imagine Joel Salatin's wonderful organic farm under the direction of the USDA, with detailed instructions on what he must feed and when, how he must medically "treat" his animals and with what, what he must "spray" and when, ... you get the picture. These bills will industrialize all farms and insure the farmers are forced to buy chemicals and drugs. Organic is dead. As well as human control over the food supply. As well as health.
H.R. 2749 includes a weak exemption for farmer to consumer or restaurant sales because of the Push Back we generated. But the bill has now passed the House and it is imperative that NO version of "food safety" pass the Senate. More Push Back is needed for more protection for dietary supplements, farmers, gardeners, community farming, all local food production (including yours!) and food processing.
We've set up an Action Item for you to send an unmistakable message to your Senators. We must educate the Senate that you value DSHEA, organic farmers and small farming and do not - do not - want independent farmers regulated out of existence. You do not want "Big Agrabiz" regulations applied to organic and small family farms and ranches or to natural/organic food products, including Dietary Supplements.

Language such as this would be helpful to allay our concerns.If the FDA Center for Food Safety is to be moved into a new Food Safety Agency, then Dietary Supplements, regulated as foods under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) should be included in such agency, with the proviso that such substances, as foods, are deemed safe when used as directed.
We oppose any bill which undermines the provisions of DSHEA and call for extending those protective provisions as has been proposed by Rep. Dr. Ron Paul of Texas. Sen. McCain's (sic) "Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010"
Natural Solutions Foundation, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org, as part of its efforts to educate Congress regarding the inestimable benefits of health and food freedom, has asked its hundreds of thousands of supporters, with many of your constituents, including me, among them, to alert you to our deep concerns for the protection of organic and small family farms and ranches from new legislation and regulation that is more properly applied to large-scale agricultural businesses. The net result of S.510, and any like it, will be to industrialize the food production of the United States with near total loss of small scale, wholesome and community-based farming. This is a loss that neither our society nor our collective health status can afford.
Our concern focuses on legislation to establish a “Food Safety Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services.” This bill is H.R. 2749 which passed the House of Representatives on July 30, 2009 despite intense opposition from the people of the United States. The Senate will soon consider a similar bill. While we do support DIVESTING THE FDA and USDA of their often mis-used food authority, I adamantly oppose the bill which the House passed and strongly OPPOSE S.510 which has even weaker protections for family farms than the House bill. AS MY ELECTED SENATOR, I URGE YOU TO VOTE AGAINST THESE BILLS and any similar substitutes. WE NEED PROTECTION FOR LOCAL, NATURAL AND ORGANIC FOOD AND FOR DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS TOO.
If the Senate insists upon passing these dangerous and ill-advised bills, it is urgently important that you write into these bills specific language protecting organic and small family farms and ranches as well as family and personal food production. These enterprises and all natural products, including organic and natural food products and Dietary Supplements, must be unambiguously exempted from the controls of these bills.
Such products and such farms and ranches are not part of the food safety problem. They are, in fact, the true food safety system. The problem is with mega-farms and agra business facilities.
H.R. 2749 included a weak exemption for farmer-to-consumer or farmer-to-restaurant sales, that is not enough! S.510 has even weaker exemptions!
We, the health and freedom focused eaters of the United States demand that our natural and organic food products, Dietary Supplements and their producers be protected from the increased regulation of food producers provided in these pending bills and any similar enactments.
Thank you for your urgent attention to this matter. Health Freedom is Our First Freedom and I look to you to protect it for all Americans.
While the Senate HELP Committee "marked-up" the bill on November 18, 2009, some minor changes were made offering some small small improvements, but the specific language recommended here is the minimum we must have to protect important citizen interests.

Aspartame Name Change - Beware!

If '...a rose by another name smells just as sweet',
as the poem goes, then
'aspartame by another name tastes just as sweet and is just as deadly!'
We know that we live in a sugar dominated society where many people are addicted to the taste of sweetness, but at the same time are suffering from the bad health effects of sugar and are tempted to try anything that tastes sweet as a sugar substitute. Aspartame is the original sugar stand-in and is more deadly and dangerous that the white refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup it pretends to replace. We must learn to leave all of it alone and retrain our taste buds in the direction of whole natural foods that are not so sweet.

Remember that there is no substitute for anything. Everything is what it is and there can be no substitutes. Any substitute is a metabolic trick that does harm to the body. So we must say no to them all - even stevia and agave - because they all send false signals to the body, making the body prepare itself for the sugar that never comes. HIgh levels of insulin result that is a major underlying cause of many chronic degenerative diseases in he body.
Let us not double-cross our bodies
like the false-food manufacturers have double-crossed us.

Beware - Aspartame Has Been Renamed 'AminoSweet

'And is now being marketed as a 'natural' sweetener!

In response to growing awareness about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, what does the manufacturer of one of the world's most notable artificial sweeteners do? Why, rename it and begin marketing it as natural, of course. This is precisely the strategy of Ajinomoto, maker of aspartame, which hopes to pull the wool over the eyes of the public with its rebranded version of aspartame, called "AminoSweet".

Over 25 years ago, aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply. Today, it is an everyday component of most diet beverages, sugar-free desserts, and chewing gums in countries worldwide. But the tides have been turning as the general public is waking up to the truth about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and the harm they cause to health. The latest aspartame marketing scheme is a desperate effort to indoctrinate the public into accepting the chemical sweetener as natural and safe, despite evidence to the contrary.

Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle & Company back in 1965. Upon mixing aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two naturally-occurring amino acids, he discovered that the new compound had a sweet taste. The company merely changed its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and, voila, aspartame was born.

G.D. Searle & Company first patented aspartame in 1970. An internal memo released in the same year urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the "habit of saying yes" and of encouraging a "subconscious spirit of participation" in getting the chemical approved.

G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA in 1973 and fought for years to gain FDA approval, submitting its own safety studies that many believed were inadequate and deceptive. Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974, igniting a blaze of controversy.

In 1976, then FDA Commissioner Alexander Schmidt wrote a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy expressing concern over the "questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety". FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical is unsafe for consumption.

Despite the myriad of evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market with the exception of a few countries that have banned it. In fact, it continued to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.

The details of aspartame's history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency's multi-million dollar approval process.

Changing aspartame's name to something that is "appealing and memorable", in Ajinomoto's own words, may hoodwink some but hopefully most will reject this clever marketing tactic as nothing more than a desperate attempt to preserve the company's multi-billion dollar cash cow. Do not be deceived.

The Fifth Taste - (Or is it really the Seventh?)


I always thought there already were 6 tastes detectable by the human tongue: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent. But now there is another, related to MSG, called umami. Umami is a Japanese word that means, 'deliciousness' or 'savoriness' and is described as the meaty flavor of meat or mushrooms as well as the deep flavor associated with sea weed dishes. The umami taste was 'discovered' in Japan more than a hundred years ago and is a chemical signal that indicates the presence of proteins. So it is not really new- in fact, it is present in breast milk and many common foods. What is new is that it is now available as a spice to be added to foods to give it that special something.

Many an amateur chef has tasted a dish only to declare that something is missing.
What follows is the inevitable excursion through the larder looking for that magic ingredient.
But the days of this culinary lottery appear to be numbered as a substance first known only to science - bottled 'deliciousness' - is coming to the High Street.
Umami was discovered 102 years ago by a Japanese scientist but until now has only graced the shelves of Michelin-starred restaurants.
It is the secret to making anything taste fantastic, so much so it is known as the 'fifth taste'.
And pretty soon you will be able to add it to absolute everything as tubes of the wonder stuff go on sale in 197 branches of Waitrose for £2.99 a tube.
Named Taste No 5, evoking the added allure of a high-class perfume, it triggers the sensation of delight in the brain when at least one of the primary tastes of sweet, sour, bitter and salty is also present.
Food writer Laura Santtini, who developed the purée, said: 'I wanted to get away from the notion that umami is something of interest to scientists that no one else can really understand.
'The truth is that umami should be of interest to anyone who has a tongue.
'Umami is part of our everyday eating lives, it is just that many of us don't know what to call it. It is what gives depth of flavour to food.
Umami - the fifth sense of taste
Umami is the Japanese word for the fifth basic sense of taste, after bitter, salty, sour and sweet.
Despite being known in the East for more than 100 years, particularly Japan, it is a relatively new concept to the West where only the four primary tastes are recognised.
Umami means deliciousness in Japanese, but translates best as 'savouriness' and provides the 'meaty' flavour in meat.
It is formed from glutamates being detected by receptors on the tongue and is the reason why monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used as a flavour enhancer.
It is also found naturally in meats, cheeses and mushrooms.
'Every food culture has its umami-rich ingredients, whether it is seaweed in Japan or Parmesan in Italy.'
The ingredients in her recipe for umami, literally meaning 'taste', include pulped anchovy and porcini mushrooms.
The umami revolution began in 1908 when Tokyo chemist Kikunae Ikeda identified it as a flavour present in foods high in glutamate.
He had first been alerted by the distinctive taste of seaweed, or kombu, which itself is high in the chemical.
His work led him to crystallise monosodium glutamate (MSG), the controversial flavour enhancer which has since become famous all over the world.
Then in 2000 researchers at the University of Miami discovered the tongue had taste receptors dedicated to sensing glutamate, which signals the presence of proteins in food that the body needs.
The opportunities presented by umami have since been exploited by the restaurant world and celebrity chefs including Heston Blumenthal who purposefully plates up dishes brimming with umami at his Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, Berkshire.
Far from being a Japanese phenomenon there are examples of foods high in umami in every culture.
Worcestershire Sauce and Marmite are two British standard bearers. Human breast milk is also high in umami.
Taste No 5 will be stocked in 197 branches of Waitrose from next week and will go on sale at the Booths supermarket chain in northern England next month.

Swine Flu Update - 13 US Deaths

This is the latest concerning what is undoubtedly the so-called 'Third Wave' of the Swine Flu pandemic which has been running globally for about one year. Deaths around the world in Ukraine have been reported previously. Now there are clusters of fatal cases in North Carolina, Michigan and other US states. There is also a spike in fatal cases in Mexico where the pandemic began a year ago. This signals a change in the genetic make-up of the H1N1 virus consisting of two mutations that are associated with the more severe and sometimes fatal illnesses. It is worrisome that the seasonal flu virus is essentially absent this year, leaving a 'biological vacuum' for the mutated H1N1. Keep all precautions in effect as winter turns into spring and natural vitamin D levels start to rise from increased sunlight.

The spike in Michigan coincides with a spike in Pneumonia and Influenza deaths in the US, but in Michigan the spike was in lab confirmed H1N1, raising concerns that a new wave has begun in the US and is more lethal than the wave which largely ended in December and early January.The start of a new wave is not unexpected. Multiple waves within one pandemic seasonal have been noted previously, and the likelihood of a wave in early 2010 was increased by the early appearance of the fall wave, as well as the absence of seasonal influenza A. Moreover, the decline in wild type H1N1 provides an opportunity for the emergence and dominance of a new strain. Recent increases in the reporting of H1N1 sequences with D225G and D225N have raised concerns that this lethal strain could become more common leading to more severe and fatal cases.There has also been a recent surge in H1N1 confirmed fatalities in Mexico, raising additional concerns for the spread of D225G. In a recent series of 10 HA sequences from fatal cases in Mexico, 5 had D225G, D225N, or both. The two sequences with both were collected within a day of each other in San Luis Potosi, raising concerns of H225G/N transmission, which was recently seen in a death cluster at Duke Medical Center in North Carolina.

America Needs Real Food


One of the best things out of the Obama White House last year was First Lady Michelle Obama's organic gardening, and now in 2010, her anti-obesity campaign. These are encouraging signs and welcome when all to often, our national leaders are prone to presenting very bad examples. Bill Clinton, in many ways is the prime bad example. His love for junk food was legendary and undoubtedly he led many a young person in the wrong direction. If the First Lady can get down on her knees and plant a garden on the White House lawn, that removes just about all excuses from everyone of us. If she can do it then we all can do it. If it is something important to her, then it should and must become important to all of us. It is a clear sign of what time it is. Yes, American teens are over weight, but at the same time 37 million are hungry. Obesity and hunger are the two sides of the same mal-nutrition coin. So what percentage of Americans actually eat a healthy diet? I have never seen such a figure. I bet it isn't high.

Teenage girls 'live on junk food', survey finds


Only 7 per cent of teenage girls eat enough fruit and vegetables

Teenage girls are eating a worse diet than they did ten years ago and putting their long-term health at risk, a national nutrition survey suggests.
Girls of secondary school age are not only living on junk food such as crisps, cakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks, but they are also smoking and drinking more than boys.
The pattern of consumption suggests that many girls are being influenced by fashion models. However, while girls aim to be slim, the study found that 37 per cent of teenage girls are overweight and 22 per cent are classified as obese. Among boys of the same age, 35 per cent are overweight but only 16 per cent are obese.
The preliminary findings of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, released yesterday, have made such depressing reading for health chiefs that civil servants have turned to social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo to see if 13 to 16-year-olds can be weaned on to healthy eating by their own friends.

The tactics are radical, but officials from the Food Standards Agency and Department of Health are dismayed that, despite all the healthy eating messages, only 7 per cent of girls are eating their “five a day” portions of fruit and vegetables and the average girl’s consumption is 2.8 portions.
Almost half of all girls are also failing to eat food rich in iron, such as cereals and red meat. A deficiency can lead to anaemia, which causes fatigue and lethargy and is a factor in some women failing to become pregnant.
Eleven per cent of girls aged 13 to 15 also admitted drinking alcohol every week, compared with 1 per cent of boys the same age, while 29 per cent of the young teenage girls said that they smoked cigarettes, compared with 16 per cent of boys.Dr Alison Tedstone, head of nutrition research at the agency, said: “Broadly, teenage girls don’t eat enough. Overall, they are a stand-alone group of the population whose diets are poor.”
An analysis of eating diaries found that the average teenage girl eats 54 grams of chips or fried potatoes every day while the average woman aged 19 to 65 eats just 40g. Each day the teenager also eats 14g of crisps or other salty snacks, 22g of sweets and choocolate, and 37g of cakes and biscuits.
The average older woman, however, will eat just 6g a day of crisps, 10g of sweets and chocolate, and 27g of cake and biscuits.
Researchers also found that teenage girls and boys were eating too much sugar and saturated fat. It is recommended that only 11 per cent of energy should come from food with sugars, yet secondary school age boys are consuming 16.3 per cent sugars a day and girls 15 per cent.
High levels of saturated fat which is linked to heart disease are also being eaten. The average recommended daily intake is 11 per cent, yet girls are eating 13.1 per cent a day and boys 12.7 per cent.
Dr Tedstone said she hoped that diets would improve as manufacturers reformulated products and lowered saturated fat and sugar content.

Pentagon Produces 'Immortal Synthetic Organisms'

Somebody in the government has gone so crazy they think that they are now ready to be God. DARPA is a research arm of the Pentagon that handles its most advanced and secretive projects and now has announced it is looking into the creation of 'immortal synthetic organisms'. One does not have to ask for what reason. The mission of the Pentagon is to kill people, so it goes without saying that these immortal organisms are the latest in mass murder. So now the wicked rulers of this world are reaching for immortality and the absolute power of life and death.

Pentagon Looks to Breed Immortal ‘Synthetic Organisms,’

The Pentagon’s mad science arm may have come up with its most radical project yet. Darpa is looking to re-write the laws of evolution to the military’s advantage, creating “synthetic organisms” that can live forever — or can be killed with the flick of a molecular switch.
As part of its
budget for the next year, Darpa is investing $6 million into a project called BioDesign, with the goal of eliminating “the randomness of natural evolutionary advancement.” The plan would assemble the latest bio-tech knowledge to come up with living, breathing creatures that are genetically engineered to “produce the intended biological effect.” Darpa wants the organisms to be fortified with molecules that bolster cell resistance to death, so that the lab-monsters can “ultimately be programmed to live indefinitely.”
Of course, Darpa’s got to prevent the super-species from being swayed to do enemy work — so they’ll encode loyalty right into DNA, by developing genetically programmed locks to create “tamper proof” cells. Plus, the synthetic organism will be traceable, using some kind of DNA manipulation, “similar to a serial number on a handgun.” And if that doesn’t work, don’t worry. In case Darpa’s plan somehow goes horribly awry, they’re also tossing in a last-resort, genetically-coded kill switch:
Develop strategies to create a synthetic organism “self-destruct” option to be implemented upon nefarious removal of organism.
The project comes as Darpa also plans to throw $20 million into a new synthetic biology program, and $7.5 million into “increasing by several decades the speed with which we sequence, analyze and functionally edit cellular genomes.”
Of course, Darpa’s up against some vexing, fundamental laws of nature — not to mention bioethics — as they embark on the lab beast program. First, they might want to rethink the idea of evolution as a random series of events, says NYU biology professor David Fitch. “Evolution by selection is nota random process at all, and is actually a hugely efficient design algorithm used extensively in computation and engineering,” he e-mails Danger Room.
Even if Darpa manages to overcome the inherent intelligence of evolutionary processes, overcoming inevitable death can be tricky. Just ask all the other research teams who’ve made stabs at it, trying everything from cell starvation to hormone treatments. Gene therapy, where artificial genes are inserted into an organism to boost cell life, are the latest and greatest in life-extension science, but they’ve only been proven to
extend lifespan by 20 percent in rats.
But suppose gene therapy makes major strides, and Darpa does manage to get the evolutionary science right. They’ll also have a major ethical hurdle to jump. Synthetic biology researchers are already facing the same questions, as a
2009 summary from the Synthetic Biology Project reports:
The concern that humans might be overreaching when we create organisms that never before existed can be a safety concern, but it also returns us to disagreements about what is our proper role in the natural world (a debate largely about non-physical harms or harms to well-being).
Even expert molecular geneticists don’t know what to make of the project. Either that, or they’re scared Darpa might sic a bio-bot on them. “I would love to comment, but unfortunately Darpa has installed a kill switch in me,” one unnamed expert tells Danger Room.
